Hot or Cool Institute is a public interest think tank working at the intersection of society and sustainability.

Our mission is to challenge the status quo, helping people reimagine what is possible and enabling systemic change towards resilient societies that thrive within ecological limits.

Our vision is of a world where living well no longer costs the Earth and where sustainable and equitable living becomes the default.

Our Impact

The 2021 1.5-Degree Lifestyles report, co-published with The Club of Rome, was covered by BBC, CBC News, Reuters and the Times. Its proposed carbon footprint targets were quoted in a UK House of Lords report on behaviour change for climate.

Our groundbreaking research on sustainable fashion published in the Unfit, Unfair, Unfashionable report, received massive media attention including from the Financial Times, New York Times, Vogue and the BBC. The report was highlighted in the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles and cited in the Dutch Textile Strategy.

We are also a leading voice in Beyond-GDP, promoting a citizen-led approach that inspired a Bill in the Brazilian government, conversations in Europe, and resulted in the launch of a Charter for a People’s Measure of Societal Success.
