About the Project

The creation of sustainable, healthy and fair food systems is necessary to address one of the most pressing global challenges. Food systems currently contribute up to 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with the potential to rise significantly if urgent changes are not made.

At the same time, millions of Europeans face food insecurity, unable to access nutritious food despite the abundance in some regions. We need to rethink how we grow, distribute and consume our food, by centering this transformation around people needs and local realities.

Through a participatory Approach to Sustainable and Healthy Food Consumption Patterns, the SPOON project aims to drive such change. Citizens are empowered with the tools and platforms needed to drive meaningful change and collaborate directly with food decision-makers.

SPOON is a four-year, EU-funded project that brings together citizens, researchers, industries, civil society organizations, and policymakers to reimagine food production, distribution and consumption.

The SPOON project aims at understanding food systems, shaping food behaviours and empowering decision makers through the implementation of community-driven research hubs (Citizen Science Labs) and behaviour change interventions in Germany, Greece, Italy, Belgium, Spain, and Slovenia, as well as through the creation of a digital toolset for food insights and governance and the design of policy recommendations towards sustainable, healthy and fair food systems.
