With only 1.2% of European climate philanthropic funding currently addressing overconsumption, there is a stark gap between the need to reduce consumption and the willingness to fund work in this area.

To understand this mismatch, the Hot or Cool Institute undertook a survey of philanthropic attitudes on overconsumption. The survey captured perspectives from across the philanthropic sector, yielding 134 responses from individuals in 22 different countries.

Results show that the philanthropy sector understands the need to prioritise deeper systems change and tackle overconsumption as part of climate mitigation work. This report details those findings alongside the organisational, sectoral, and systemic barriers impeding progress.
